Where do you get your news from? Newspapers, local TV stations, foreign stations, radio or the grape vine? We posed this question to several persons in the street and here is what they said.
Norvell Fredericks, businessman
`I live in Linden and we have only one television station, that is how we sometimes get our news. The name is NCN and this so ironic because sometimes when you watch you can't see anything. I mainly get my news from the newspaper. I enjoy some of the news written in it but not much. Most of what you read in the newspaper is about crime. There is hardly any good news. I believe that the newspapers should have more features. They should focus on the positives that are happening in society, for example using young business people as role models for young entrepreneurs'.
Verta Benjamin, sales girl
`I get my news from the radio and television because when I am doing my housework I can listen to both. I enjoy the music and the morning news on the radio. When it comes to the television I like to look at all the news. I do so for about three hours every day'.
Owen Stewart, photographer
`I prefer the radio when it comes to news. While I am resting or lying down I can listen to it. If you are watching television you have to keep your eyes open, but that is not so for the radio. I listen to the radio morning and evening every day. I have been admiring the news for a while now after listening to CANA and BBC news. You don't only hear what is going on around Guyana in the news but also what is going on outside'.
Lynette Rodney, retired teacher
`I depend on the television stations for my news because I get pictures which are the real thing. I enjoy watching TV news every day'.
Sonja Abrams, sales representative
`I get news from everywhere and I don't enjoy it because it is always about some tragedy. I watch the news because it is about the current issues in the country and I also look at foreign news especially CNN and BBC. The news is more detailed and has a lot more information'.
Cindy Abrams, housewife
`I get my news from the radio and TV. I like those two because you can hear what is going on and you understand the news better. You can listen to both when you are working and relaxing. I listen to radio and look at TV news every day. I enjoy what I hear'.
Magnus Husbands, salesman
`Newspaper is where I get my news from. I read the newspaper because I don't have a TV. The newspaper is more informative and in-depth. I read newspapers mostly on Sundays. I enjoy what I read'.
Francis Persaud, businessman
`I hear news from the grapevine and I think that news is reliable. I believe the news people tell me. I also get my news from listening to the radio. I do so every morning for about one hour. You can listen to the radio and do your chores at the same time'.
Michelle Hill, public sector employee
`I get my news from the television and newspaper and in some cases the radio. I look at all the news broadcast on television, read the newspaper on an average of five times per week. I don't listen to the radio much. I enjoy what I read and see'.
Sherry Bacchus, registered nurse
`I listen to the radio and all other forms of communication. I do get some of my news from word of mouth but sometimes I don't go with it because it is a rumour. I also listen to foreign news. I have a lot of people living outside so I am interested in outside news'.
