A 0.7% decrease in consumer prices has pushed down the year-to-date inflation rate to 3% for October, according to the Bureau of Statistics after monitoring a basket of goods and services under the Urban (Georgetown) Consumer Price Index (CPI).

And on an annual basis, that is when comparing October 2005 to October 2006, the Urban (Georgetown) index rose by 3.6%.

The 0.7% decrease in prices in October was primarily influenced by an overall decrease in the food group of 1.1%. This decrease resulted from downward price movements in the sub-categories of pulses & pulse products by 2.4%; milk and milk products by 0.1%; condiments and spices by 7.8%, vegetable and vegetable products by 5.1%, fruits and fruit products by 7.8%, sugar, honey and related products by 1.7% and non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages both by 0.6%.

There were increases in the sub-categories of cereals and cereal products of 0.2%, meat, fish and eggs by 0.8%, oils and fats by 0.8%, alcoholic beverages by 0.2% and tobacco products by 1%. These increases did not reverse the overall downward price trend in the food group.
