What is the best thing that has happened in your life for 2006? Why do you say it was the best? We asked the man and the woman in the street these questions and this is what they had to say:
Stacie Bradshaw, housewife: 'The best thing that has happened in my life for the year is that I'm getting married on this day [Saturday]. I am really excited about it and I'm just here waiting to take the tables and chairs to the hall. Apart from this, I am truly grateful to God for seeing this day and the end of the year.'
Kingsley O' Brien, labourer: 'The best thing that has happened in my life is that I have become a Christian and I have been able to maintain my Christianity throughout the year. I attend the Central Assembly of God Church.'
Tiffany Johnson, cashier: 'Nothing exciting has happened to me as yet for the year. I have had a lot of dilemmas. I recently finished school and I miss my friends. My brother broke his leg in an accident - this being the second time. I just hope that before the year is over something good will happen in my life.'
Ameer Hassan, private sector employee: 'The best thing that has happened in my life for the year is that I changed jobs and my new job is more challenging and fits in with my career. I love what I do now and since I working at this new place in June, things have gotten better in my life and I'm also attending classes.'
Audrey John, public sector employee: 'The best thing that has happened to me in this year is experiencing the true love of Jesus Christ in a greater diversity and dimension. Through his love I have been able to encourage people from all walks of life and I have been able to reach out to those persons who are experiencing social problems. Another good thing about the year is that I was promoted at my job and I am able to function at and play a role in the financial sector of the country. This year has given me greater connections with people and friendships lost have been restored.'
Savindra Phillip, laboratory technician: 'The best thing that has happened in my life for the year is that I have a good job, working with great people in a good environment. I also recently moved into a new place and I enjoy the freedom of being on my own. I also became a Christian this year and accepted God as my Lord and Saviour.'
Juanita Thomas, UG student: 'The best thing that has happened in my life this year is that I got a B on my economics examination and I'm looking to improve on my grade. I am happy because last year I got an F on that same exam. Economics is not my best subject so to be able to secure a B is of great significance to me. The year has been a peaceful one for me and I believe that I have grown a lot and I am able to see the world differently. I have learnt over the year to be at peace with myself and others.'
Mohamed Khan, private sector employee: 'The best thing that has happened in my life for the year is that I got to see an aunt of mine who I had not seen in five years. She is one of my favourite aunts and I was really happy to see her. Today is also a good day for me because it's my day off. I am really hoping that something better will happen in my life before December 31.
Shenella Gomes, counsellor: 'This has been a good year for me, I am eternally grateful for life, my job, friends and my family. Although most persons are complaining about the cost of living and that there are no jobs in the country I am happy because I am healthy and have people who care about me. I have God on my side and there is nothing else I can ask for. I'm content.'
David Shepherd, public sector employee: 'The best thing that has happened in my life this year is that I have finished paying my mortgage and I can happily say that I own my own home. After all the sacrifices made I don't have to keep paying. Additionally, I was able to find forgiveness in my heart for persons who I couldn't forgive in the past. This has made me more at ease with myself and I have found more strength to deal with things. This has been a good year for me now that I have been able to reflect on it.'
