President Bharrat Jagdeo contributed $1M each to the Kashif and Shanghai Organ-isation and the Georgetown Football Association(GFA) on Friday as a demonstration of his continued support for local football.
A Guyana Information News Agency (GINA) release stated that Jagdeo's financial support of the two organisations had become an annual feature in support of the local football fraternity.
"The President's financial and other support has become annual," the release stated adding that last year, Jagdeo also provided $1M for the Kashif and Shanghai football tournament along with $50,000 for each team's preparations.
Executive of the Kashif and Shanghai organisation, Aubrey 'Shanghai' Major expressed gratitude for the contribution in the release, while stating that the president's input dates back to the time when Jagdeo was Minister of Finance.
According to Major, as Minister of Finance, Jagdeo ensured that the Mackenzie Sports Club ground was fitted with lights. Major said that the lights, then, were a major boost to the sport in Linden.
The release indicated that Jagdeo usually provided the $800,000 first place prize for the tournament but had decided this year to contribute a further $200,000 for "any other expenses that may be incurred during the games."
