What presents are you hoping to get on Christmas Day? And what are your chances of getting them? We asked the man/woman in the street these questions and here is what they said:
June Amsterdam, self-employed - `I am hoping for love from my family circle. I wouldn't be looking for any physical things because life is more important than anything else. Everything at home is in order I just have to pick up some fine things like sweets and snacks. My fairy lights and blinds are up. I choose pink and white for the blinds this year. I think I have a very good chance of getting love on Christmas Day. It all begins in the home.'
James Barnwell, security officer - 'I would like to have a house for a present on Christmas Day. I don't have one of my own and I live with my parents. A nice small one would do. I know that it is probably too late to get a present like this so I would work towards getting it in the New Year. By next year Christmas I would like to be living in my own house. I am not doing much in terms of decorating and renovating the house this Christmas. I am only looking after food. My Christmas lunch would be pepper pot and rice while on Boxing Day I would have cook up rice and fried chicken for lunch. I plan to enjoy this Christmas Day once I am alive.'
Roxanne Wilson, housewife - `I would like to get a new outfit on Christmas Day. I think I have an excellent chance of getting it. My house is in order. I chose pink as my colour this year because it is my favourite colour. I have finished baking my black cake and my pepper pot has already been made. I have a special lunch to prepare for Christmas Day.'
Clenton Isaac, contractor - `The most I can look forward to is protection. I know that I will get that on Christmas Day. My wife is responsible for getting the house in order and things look like they are in order. Red seems to be our colour for this year. I am from Bartica and I have bought presents for members of my family.'
Tony Bradford, sales clerk - `I expect to be alive on Christmas Day. Life is the present that I am hoping for. I am not looking for luxury. Life is the best present that I can get. No one can predict life. It is up to the Almighty above to present us with that. I know what I am about when it comes to interior decoration and I am very good at cooking. This year my colour is cream. I am having pepperpot morning, noon and night for Christmas.'
Shri Hansraj, shovel ranger - `The present I want on Christmas Day is to pass the day safe and in good health. I think I will have a safe day. Christmas Day is just an observance and it will be a normal day for me. I haven't gotten new blinds this year. I used the ones from last year Christmas. I look forward to good food and fruits, ginger beer, rum and an appetizing pepperpot.'
Adel James, secondary school student - `I would like to get a Chinese checkers on Christmas Day because I want to learn how to play the game. I think I have a good chance of getting it from someone because I told several of my relatives that I wanted the game. No one has said anything to me since then. I think they want it to be a surprise. I am excited about this season because it is a joyous holiday filled with peace and love.'
Sylvia Thompson, Nurse - `I would like to have a dress with a bag and matching shoes as my present on Christmas Day. I would like to have this because I want to go to an Old Year's night ball. I have the money so I just have to find it. I love a good fried rice and that will be my Christmas lunch along with salads and some ginger beer. My colours this year are white and cream.'
Keith Lewis, security supervisor - `Good presents for me on Christmas Day will be love, unity and a better life with my relatives. It is up to me to make these presents a reality. My Christmas lunch will be fried rice and chicken. I will be working on Christmas Day. I have become accustomed to this because I have been working on Christmas Day for years now. It is no problem for me.'
Charles Conway, co-op consultant - `I don't expect any presents on Christmas Day. What I would like to see though is a change in the attitude of young people in Guyana that is taking a more responsible attitude towards life. Christmas lunch for me is normally pepperpot with some soup, peas and rice, chowmein, malta and shandy and of course ginger beer which completes each meal.'
