Guyana’s attainment of its Republic status from Great Britain in February 23, 1970 remains an indelible part of the country’s history and each year colourful celebrations and the ceremonial hoisting of the Golden Arrowhead are undertaken to remind the nation of its struggle to become an independent nation.
The Golden Arrowhead was ceremonially hoisted yesterday at Parliament Building, in the presence of Head of State President Bharrat Jagdeo, Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony, the acting Police Commissioner Henry Greene and the Chief of Staff of the Guyana Defence Force, Brigadier Edward Collins.
Also present at the ceremony were other Cabinet Ministers, members of the Joint Services, the Diplomatic Corps and members of the public.
When the Head of State arrived, he took the presidential salute and then inspected the Guard of Honour, comprising more than 100 members of the Guyana Defence Force and the Guyana Police Force.
Representatives of the three major religions in Guyana then offered prayers for the nation and its rulers.
The Golden Arrowhead was hoisted during the sounding of the traditional 21-gun salute and it flew high in the centre of six flags: the Joint Services, the Guyana Fire Service, the Guyana Police Force, the Guyana Defence Force, the Guyana Prison Service and the Georgetown City Council.
The National Pledge was then recited, followed by the singing of the Song of the Republic and the National Anthem.
