Hundreds of Region Five residents, particularly West Berbician, were Thursday evening reminded of the need for the continued contribution to the development of the region and the country, minutes before the hoisting of the Golden Arrowhead at midnight, marking Guyana’s 37th anniversary as a Republic.

“Each Guyanese has a role to play in the development of the country. Region Five has been very strong in its contributions to development and this should continue.”

This appeal was made by Minister of Human Services and Social Security Priya Manickchand who delivered an address at the Regional Democratic Council’s (RDC) flag-raising ceremony held at Fort Wellington, West Coast Berbice.

The Minister told the gathering that Guyana has come a far way in its development and the country is moving rapidly up the ladder. She urged Guyanese to continue to work together.

She noted that significant progress has been made in the delivery of better health care and social services to the people, and this will continue.

“As we hoist the National Flag, we should determine in our minds where we are, where we are going and where we would like to be as a country,” she said.

Regional Chairman Harrynarine Baldeo said the region has recorded significant progress, especially in the area of education, and last year three nursery schools were built in the region.

“This is all being done to boost Government’s efforts at ensuring that quality education is delivered to the children of Guyana. We are hoping that by the end of this year we should have a Practical Instruction Centre at Mahaicony,” he said.

The Regional Chairman advised that, “as we are about to hoist the Golden Arrowhead to mark our 37th Republic anniversary, we must work together to move Guyana forward and we should unite as a people and break the barriers of hate, race and discrimination.”

.The ceremony included cultural presentations from students of the No.5 and No.29 primary schools, Bush Lot and Fort Wellington Secondary schools. Youths of the President’s Youth Award Programme – Republic of Guyana. PYARG also entertained the gathering with songs, drama presentations and calypsos.
