The National Stadium at Providence is expected to be a “Hotspot” with plans in train to install Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) in time for the Guyana leg of ICC Cricket World Cup 2007.
The most common usage of WiFi technology is for laptop users to gain internet access in locations such as airports, coffee shops, and so on, facilitating consumers in their pursuit of work-based or recreational internet usage.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony told Kaieteur News that the technology will be in place by the time the mega-event rolls into Guyana .
“This beautiful stadium is going to be internet ready,” Minister Anthony said on Monday during his address at the opening of a training programme for security officers.
He added that at any part of the stadium fans will be able to access the internet once they bring their laptop in during the games.
The Minister stated that the WiFi technology will be of great assistance to the media and other such officials who rely heavily on the internet.
He said that fans can watch the cricket and still have global access at their fingertips.
Last month, Parliament took a similar decision to install WiFi technology, giving Parliamentarians access to the Internet within the Chamber and the MPs' Lounge.
Since then, many of the Parliamentarians have been seen browsing the Internet during the lengthy debate on the budget.
