The display of Guyana 's national flag (The Golden Arrowhead) during Cricket World Cup (CWC) will serve to demonstrate the patriotism of Guyanese during this country's hosting of fixtures in the mega-event, which is fixed to begin next Wednesday.
Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Kellawan Lall made this disclosure recently when he met with members of several Region Four Neighbourhood Democratic Councils.
According to the Minister efforts should be made to ensure that national flags are visibly displayed on public buildings as part of enhancement efforts which were streamlined for Guyana 's hosting of the games.
He pointed out that several Government buildings have already been affixed with the Golden Arrow Head as part of this initiative.
Lall further revealed that Government will take on the responsibility of procuring several thousand flags with the intention of distributing to the various governmental institutions.
He informed the NDC representatives that they too could make similar procurement at Guyana Stores Limited and other entities which have increased their supply of flags, primarily for this purpose.
Members of the public are also being urged to participate in this venture according to the Minister noting that they could display national flag stickers and miniature flags on their vehicles.
And while it is expected that some cricket fans will be eager to display their national flags at the games there are some restrictions which will be imposed by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
According to ICC CWC 2007 Security Director, John Collymore while flag poles will be totally prohibited, fans will be able to bring specifically sized flags to support their respective teams.
• Only banners and flags meeting a maximum size of 1.5 x 1m (5' x 3') will be permitted, providing that in the opinion of the CWC they are not vulgar, political, racial, discriminatory, of a sexual nature or display advertising which may in any way impinge or will be in conflict with the rights of the partners, sponsors, suppliers or vendors of the event or deemed to be offensive to other spectators.
