Pandemonium broke out yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates' Court after a scuffle ensued between members of the Guyana Police Force and two of the accused in the Kaieteur News murders.

The drama began when Quincy Evans, called ‘Jimmy Dog,' who is charged with several counts of murder, collected something from his relatives at the court steps and a Police constable attempted to check to see what it was.

It was at this point that Evans refused, pulling his hand away. As the constable made a second attempt to retrieve the object, Evans chucked the rank.

As the two continued tugging at each other, Dwight Da Silva, who is also charged with numerous counts of murder, intervened and sparked a scuffle between the two and some ranks of the Police.

Da Silva, showing no fear of the heavily armed ranks, advanced toward one of the ranks protesting the attempt to take away the object from his accomplice. At this point, another physical exchange ensued with Da Silva managing to kick one of the ranks, who immediately threatened to use his automatic weapon.

During the fracas, 13-year-old ‘Nasty Man' attempted to join in but was easily subdued by ranks present, who eventually quelled the situation and loaded the accused murderers into the waiting Prison Service transportation.

Kaieteur News understands that the object Evans received from his relatives was an undisclosed sum of money.

Jermaine Charles, aka Skinny, and Delwyn Carrington calmly proceeded to the waiting transportation.

Charles is charged with the murders of Gilford Henry, Devon Charles, and Bagotstown businessman Wordsworth Grey, as well as the five Kaieteur News pressmen who were shot dead on the night of August 8, last year.

Carrington, ‘Nasty Man', Da Silva, and Evans are also charged with Grey's murder.

The accused in the killings: Charles, Dwight Da Silva, called ‘Whitey' and Quincy Evans, called ‘Jimmy Dog', are appearing before Magistrate Gordon Gilhuys at the Georgetown Magistrates' Court.

The Preliminary Inquiry (PI) began on February 16, more than five months after killings occurred at the Kaieteur News printery, Eccles, East Bank Demerara.

On February 19, during the court session, Nadine Wegman, the wife of deceased Kaieteur News pressman Eion Wegman, testified.

There was also testimony from Kamechan Harripersaud, the KN pressman who survived the mass execution of his five colleagues.

After Harripersaud, a senior press technician, gave evidence. Richardson briefly cross-examined him.

The prisoners also have other matters pending and includes robbery-under-arms and unlawful possession of arms and ammunition.

Charles is also charged with the murders of Agriculture Minister Satyadeow Sawh, the Minister's two siblings -- Pulmattie Persaud and Rajpat Sawh -- and security guard Curtis Robinson.

That execution occurred on April 22 at the Minister's residence, La Bonne Intention, East Coast Demerara.

Da Silva and Jermaine Charles are also jointly charged with the murder of Kaneville businessman Barbot Paul.

It is alleged that the two men shot Paul in his head, chest and right side, at about 21:00hrs on August 6 last.

The two reportedly retrieved the slain businessman's pistol along with several rounds of ammunition.

Jermaine Charles is also charged with the murder of 23-year-old Devon Charles, who was murdered at about 21:30 hrs on January 23 last.

It is alleged that he shot the Kaneville resident in an alleyway at Agricola.

According to reports, Devon Charles was talking with some friends when a white car pulled up.

Devon Charles reportedly ran into an alley, where Jermaine Charles allegedly pulled out a gun and shot him.

Additionally, Charles has been charged with the shooting to death of Guyana Defence Force private Gilford Henry.

Henry, 24, was killed on the Agricola Public Road, at around 02:00 hrs, after Jermaine Charles reportedly attempted to rob the minibus in which he was a passenger.

It is alleged that Henry, who was shot in the jaw, was on his way to work when Jermaine Charles attacked the mini bus in which he was travelling.

He reportedly attempted to rob the conductor, but his efforts were futile, thus a round was fired.

The final murder charge that was read to Jermaine Charles is that of 12-year-old Kevin Brown, who was shot while exiting a bathroom at his stepfather's McDoom home.

The accused in the high profile killings are to return to court on May 10.
