From all indications, the Super Eight matches for Cricket World Cup (CWC) which start in Guyana on March 28 at the Guyana National Stadium at Providence will go on despite recent speculations about the event.
The Irish and Sri Lankan teams arrived at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport on Saturday, followed by the South Africans early yesterday morning. West Indies and New Zealand are the other teams listed to compete during the six days.
The first match between South Africa and Sri Lanka is expected to bowl off on March 28. The mega event will climax on April 1 in an anticipated match between the West Indies and Sir Lanka.
Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony, noted that tickets for the April 1 event are available but categories two and three have been sold out.
The LOC is nevertheless encouraging Guyanese to purchase tickets which are being sold in the different categories: US$100, US$90, US$75 and US$25 at the centre on Middle Street .
Tickets are also being sold for $1,000 for motor vehicle owners to occupy a parking space on the newly developed park and walk facility, an 11-acre plot of land between the Guyana National Stadium and the Buddy's International Stadium. The facility was built to accommodate about 2,500 vehicles.
Minister Anthony noted recently that the small scoreboard, television screens, bowling machines and practice nets at the Stadium have been installed, while other areas that needed rectification at the two practice venues, the Guyana Cricket Club (GCC) ground and Everest, have been addressed.
Security mechanisms including road blocks, searches and indictment in the city, East Coast Demerara, Berbice, at the stadium and practice venues and river and land patrols will be heightened during CWC.
On match days, the East Bank Demerara four-lane highway will be considered a no-parking zone.
From 06:00hrs to 11:00hrs and 15:00hrs to 20:00hrs the eastern carriageway will cater specifically for vehicles travelling to the stadium, while the western lane will be opened as a two-way lane. (GINA)
