The Georgetown Reading and Research Centre (GRRC) on Thursday launched a library programme through which children aged 11 years and under, countrywide, can borrow books to read from the centre, free of charge.

According to a press release from the GRRC, the programme 'Read Early and Develop Yourself' (READY) was launched because it is well known that the ability to read is the major foundation for school based learning. It added that the development of literacy skills through experiences with books and stories is critically linked, not only to a child's success in reading, but to academic success.

In addition, the GRRC has mounted a 'giveaway' sale at its 179 Waterloo Street, Georgetown location. Every person who spends $1,000 or more will receive six free books or 15% off his/her purchase, plus 20% of the purchase in chits to buy more books at any subsequent period. In addition, schools, churches and other organisations will be given 25% off their book purchases.
