Police last evening arrested two former top associates of Guyanese businessman, Roger Khan, who is presently facing drug trafficking charges in the United States of America .
The men, former policemen Gerald Perriera and Paul Rodrigues, were arrested by a party of heavily armed ranks on Brickdam, a short distance away from the Georgetown Magistrates' Court.
While the police have confirmed the arrests, they declined to give details or provide reason for the men's detention.
A source close to the two men told this newspaper that he was informed that the men were told by the arresting ranks that they were being held for impersonating.
However, the source said that the men were not told who or what they were impersonating. Both Perriera and Rodrigues became high profile fugitives last year during a Joint Services crackdown on elements in the city as part of their search for the missing GDF AK-47 assault rifles.
Bulletins were issued for their arrests along with several other persons including Roger Khan. While Perriera turned himself over to local police and was slapped with minor charges, Rodrigues fled Guyana to Suriname where he, Khan and two other former cops were held in a drug crackdown.
Rodrigues and the two other cops, Sean Belfield and Lloyd Roberts, spent almost six months without charge in a maximum security prison in Suriname , while Khan was taken to the US to answer to several drug trafficking indictments.
Upon their return to Guyana , the men were charged with departing the country illegally and have been placed on bail. Since then they have been keeping a low profile.
A senior police officer told this newspaper that last evening's arrest of the two men has nothing to do with Khan's drug hearings in the United States of America.
