Chairman of the Local Or-ganising Committee (LOC )for the International Cricket Council's 2007 Cricket World Cup competition Karan Singh said yesterday that the major challenge the committee encountered was preparing the physical aspects of the stadium.
Speaking at a press conference at LOC headquarters, Middle Street, yesterday, Singh said:"The major challenge we experienced was whereby we were coming too close to the local matches without preparation of the physical aspects of the stadium."
He gave the example of the accreditation centre among other aspects of the stadium that were not finished in time for the Guyana Cricket World Cup (CWC) matches.
"The biggest challenge of all was getting good, reliable and efficient Internet support service on time for broadcasters and preparing the media centre," Singh stated.
Singh explained that money was not a problem but rather it was the management of the money that posed the challenges.
When asked about the budget of the LOC, Singh said that the committee was in the process of tallying expenses and the figures were not yet ready.
A lot of donations were given by the Guyana Election's Commission and other business organisations and Singh expressed his sincere thanks to all of them.
He also paid special tribute to all the LOC staff members who had very critical roles in making the Guyana Cricket World Cup (CWC) a success.
Among those recognised as outstanding workers were Events Manager Jai Naraine Singh, Malcolm Williams, who was in charge of information technology and communication network and Sabrina Panday, who Singh said demonstrated good leadership by managing the CWC volunteers.
Singh added that the CWC volunteers did an excellent job at promoting Guyana. The VIP officers, he said, also worked tirelessly night and day to prepare the presidential box for executives attending the games.
Singh highlighted the excellent standard of the security and health facilities and commended the Commis-sioner of Police and his staff for a job well done. Additionally, there was much satisfaction where the traffic management was concerned.
Meanwhile, Singh hinted that the life of the LOC will be terminated in June after expenses are tallied and all bills paid.
