The main opposition party has urged that treason-accused prisoner Mark Benschop be freed.

PNCR leader Robert Corbin says Benschop should not be subjected to another trial, after spending four years being what he described as wrongfully imprisoned. He said Benschop's continued incarceration is a disgrace and the government should hang its head in shame.

"It is time for the unwarranted incarceration of Mark Benschop to end now and the PNCR will no longer allow this matter to drift…" Corbin said, while also urging the people to act as well.

Corbin noted that the governing PPP/C had spent years campaigning for the release of treason accused Arnold Rampersaud and on their ascension to office, promptly pardoned other persons accused of treason, one of whom is now a senior officer in the Guyana Police Force. As a result, he said the party expected that with the euphoria of the Cricket World Cup in Guyana and President Bharrat Jagdeo's boasting of the new national spirit, Benschop would be released from prison.

Benschop, a one time controversial TV talk show host, was charged with treason for his alleged role in the 2002 storming of the Office of the President.
