An afternoon well spent: After leaving school this Brickdam Secondary School student visited the exhibition of Guyanese books and pictorial display of writers. In this Jules Gibson photo she looks at one of the books on display.
Books written on our politicians, rich folk culture and history were on display during the recently concluded exhibition of Guyanese books and a pictorial display of writers, which was held at the National Library.
This exhibition which is the second of its kind here in Guyana was in honour of World Book Copyright Day celebrated on April 23 but it saw a disappointing turnout.
The three-day event, which was held under the theme `Land of many writers', began last Monday.
Those who visited were able to get a glimpse of literature on Walter Rodney, Forbes Burnham, Cheddi Jagan among others and copies of regular features such as the Guyana Annual.
Patrons also viewed photographs of those who won the Guyana Prize for Literature including Ian Mc Donald, Stanley Greaves and Ruel Johnson and also discovered who some of Guyana's upcoming writers are.
Petamber Persaud who is deeply involved in literature and hosts several television programmes was in charge of the exhibition when The Scene visited. He said this was the second year that the exhibition has been held.
Last year, he said, the exhibition was a one-day affair and it was decided that it should be extended to three days so that more people would have the opportunity to visit. But it was only the first day that brought a large crowd.
Persaud who is also a writer will soon be launching three of his books.
This year will mark the 12th World Book and Copyright Day and it allows persons to pay tribute to books which are an essential tool for expression, education and communication. This day is celebrated by people in all continents and cultural backgrounds.
